Count lii

toxicology RETOLD BY SHERLOCK HOLMES

THE COUNT’S INTENTION OF going to Madame de Villefort’s home was to return the procurer’s visit. She happened to be in the drawing room alone when he was announced. She had her son, Edward, brought in to thank the Count again for their rescue. The boy came, not out of gratitude, but out of curiosity of the things he had been hearing about this man since the accident.

Monte Cristo inquired about M. de Villefort but was told he was dining with the chancellor and that he would be disappointed by missing the visit.

“Where is your sister Valentine?” Edward’s mother asked the boy. “I would like her to meet the Count.”

“Oh, you have a daughter?” the Count asked. “She must be very young.”

“She is the daughter of my husband by his first marriage,” Madame replied.

The boy was running wild. He had just plucked a tail feather from one of the parakeets to put in his cap. The bird screeched as it disappeared from its tormenter.

“Stop it, Edward! Go find your sister.”

The boy was scampering around the room, then stopped and fed a live fly to one of the birds, who appreciated it immensely.

About that time, Valentine walked into the room. She was about nineteen-years-of-age, tall and graceful, with chestnut hair and deep blue eyes. She reminded the Count of a swan, so delicate and beautiful.

The Count rose.

“This is my daughter-in-law,” said Madame Villefort.

The spoiled brat made some kind of rude statement and was shushed by his mother.

“But Madame, have I not had the pleasure of meeting you both before?” said the Count.

“I don’t think that’s very likely.”

“It was somewhere far away from here. I also remember your boy chasing a peacock in a garden. Do you not remember?”

“No, I have no recollection.”

“Perhaps in Italy,” Valentine said.

“Yes, that’s it, Italy,” the Count remarked. “I think it was about two years ago. It was at Perugia on Corpus Christi Day in the garden of the Hotel des Postes.”

“I am really ashamed, but I still do not remember meeting you,” Madame Villefort exclaimed.

“I recall it was such a hot day, and Madame was waiting for the horses while your daughter was walking in the shade and your lovely little boy was chasing the peacock.”

“Yes, Momma, and I caught it!” the boy piped up, a happy look upon his face.

“I do remember talking to a person wrapped in a long woolen mantle, a medicine man I think,” she remembered.

“Yes, Madame, that was me. I had just cured my valet of a fever and my landlord of jaundice so I was given that reputation.”

“I remember now,” she said with uneasiness in her voice.

“I do not remember what all we discussed, but I do remember you inquiring about the health of Mademoiselle de Villefort.”

“Well, I believed you to be a medicine man.”

“It is only a hobby of mine. I studied chemistry but am really only an amateur.”

As if to get Valentine out of the room, M. Villefort asked her to go see about her grandfather’s dinner.
